Phrase breakdown and usage notes

Quick use

Use どっちですか (docchi desu ka) in or around stations when you are not sure which way to go.

It is especially useful after someone points, says a platform number, or gives a route that you did not fully catch.

Chunk or pattern

  • This is a fixed phrase.
  • Learn the whole line first.
  • If you can point to two directions, signs, exits, or platforms while saying it, it becomes much easier to understand.

Helper words and endings

  • どっち: which way / which one, used in casual everyday speech.
  • ですか: polite question ending.

Practical note

This is short, but a little casual. For a more careful version, you can say どちらですか (dochira desu ka).
